- "Web Tools" contains tools for MOSAIC web users. A demo for flash-pix and VRML has activated
- The MOSAIC logo has been produced. It is the outcome of the various stages experienced by the graphic alphabet, it is a fundamental means for communication and culture. It is the synthesis of the graphic excursus, which goes from the Roman inscriptions, through Charlemagne, with the Caroline writing, who was the promoter of the unity of the western graphics, to the Renaissance harmonisation and the XIX century ornate style. The colours of the logo come out from an artistic elaboration of a detail of the EU flag, as an interpretation of the contents of the project MOSAIC.
- An open e-mail has been activated on the web. It is mosaic@bancaroma.it.
- The four registration forms for "Potential Partners", "Information Request", "User Registration", "Remarks" have been activated.
- July 1st the output of work-package 1100 (Survey on the state of the Art) has been inserted on the MOSAIC web both in HTML and .doc format
- July 7th a new MOSAIC web zipped version has been inserted on the MOSAIC web (for downloading)
- October the WP 1400 document and the first issue of WP 1500 document has been inserted on the MOSAIC web.
- an ftp account on UNIX machine has been created to enable fast files downloading (zero.infobyte.it)
The MOSAIC web has been completed in all the different language version and each partner manages and upgrades the mirrored version. In the Info area is present a save-screen of the MOSAIC project. The area demo illustrates some selected tool and running tool in the final CSC configuration already available on the Cineca platform. All the project documentation is in line for the authorised person. The MOSAIC communication and presentation tape is ready.
3. Technical
The following table illustrates a synthesis of the work in progress.
WP number description status WP 1100 Survey of the "state of the art" in progress WP 1200 Market plan in progress WP 1300 Partner search and economical agreement definition 45% WP 1400 Target User profile definition 100% WP 1500 Requirements definition, tools, service centres, application 90% WP 1600 Study for the reuse of existing applications into the defined architecture 10% WP 1700 Architecture definition and tools definition 10% WP 1800 Dissemination of results WP 1900 Management 45% WP 2000 CSC model demonstrator 35% Due to the presence of important events in August (Siggraph 97 - Los Angeles) and in September (ICHIM 97 - Paris), we decided to update our acknowledge with the outputs of these conferences and update the WP 1100 (survey on the state of the art). Similar considerations have been done for the WP 1400. In fact in both manifestations interviews were scheduled to obtain information to refine the WP 1400 document. For the WP 1400 document these updates have already been inserted in the delivered issue of the document.
The WP 2000, has been activated in order to obtain some tools and services on line. The main elements has been presented in the demo area of the mosaic web.
The main technological goals of the events:
- August 1st - 10th: ACM Siggraph 97 in Los Angeles - annual international conference and exhibition devoted to computer graphics and multimedia. Is still one of the easier world-wide occasion to meet in one site and in a few days only experts, researchers and top line companies (please refer to Siggraph 97 web-www.siggraph.org/s97/).
TEN Telecom programme is a market oriented framework, the main issue of TEN projects is to create and deliver trough the network new 'smart' services mainly using or re-using existing technologies (this is not a research framework). MOSAIC is consequently based on networks, VR and hypermedia applications selected from the full range of existing and quickly evolving technologies. The WPK 1100 outlined some of such technologies like "flashpix" hi-resolution imaging system (Kodak, MS, HP ..), SUMS programme universal media searching system, HTML 3.2 active pages, VRML, infinity resolution IVR and so on. People and companies working on such technologies are present at Siggraph to outline the future developments of their studies. This has been useful to consolidate the development of MOSAIC and create joint projects. High performance, low price head mounted display will be probably used in MOSAIC Cultural Service Centres or home based applications and the same may apply to 3D navigation devices. Canadian indexing systems are surely world-wide very well known. Attending Siggraph we have meet and enforce even existing relationships with such companies. Some meetings with experts and companies has been made. Due to the even increasing market and high speed of development in IT we plan to update and tune our survey on the state of art and consequently MOSAIC standards (WP 1400 and WP 1500) before the completion of the first year, this thanks to a continuous tracking on emerging technologies and new markets.
On this occasion we have proposed a presentation of MOSAIC project first year results as contribution to Siggraph 98 (Orlando FL). We think that MOSAIC will guarantee a multimedia access to Europe's cultural heritage but as preliminary studies carried out on the possible markets have outlined that USA, CANADA and Japan will probably be the major markets for "Europe's Cultural Services" and in this perspective disseminating results and techniques at Siggraph "stage" is surely a good start. To reach this goal we have to work very hard with the ACM technical committee.- August 11th - 13th: meetings in San Francisco with SGI, Xerox and other companies for preliminary discussion of technical and economical agreement linked to WPK 1300, 1400, 1600 and 1700
- August 14th - 16th: meeting in Redmond (Seattle) Microsoft headquarters for preliminary discussion of technical and economical agreement linked to WPK 1300, 1400, 1500 and 2000
Both the meeting in San Francisco and Seattle are mainly devoted to keep in touch with research centres and technology providers like Xerox PARC leader in human/machine interfaces and network technology or Microsoft laboratories market leader also for home market. And particularly speaking about the role of Microsoft they are actually a reference point for high volume market (the main market to fund cultural heritage services - a big amount of small fees). Another reason to meet people from SGI, Netscape, Apple and Microsoft is the real possibility to promote MOSAIC solution on the market, at least for the first year of implementation, taking advantage of distribution channels linked to widely diffused operating systems and network browsers. The global potential market offered by the Internet forces to solve the market approach globally, one possible scenario for MOSAIC may be a bundled system with the most popular products distributed world-wide instead of a never ending sequence of separate agreement with each institution and country. Try to solve self-funding problem using on line transactions, prepaid services and other possible solution in the first period seems not to be the best solution to create a non-existing market.- August 17th - 20th: meeting in Toronto (Canada) with Prof. Kim Veltman's equipe devoted to SUMS project application to MOSAIC. SUMS (System for Universal Media Searching) was foreseen as primary "search engine" for MOSAIC Internet applications.
During this period (from May to July) the activities done are mainly related to the WP 1100, 1300, and 1400.
The WP 1100 document has been delivered, but an upgrading is still in progress as above mentioned. The WP 1100 document has been delivered, but an upgrading is still in progress as above mentioned. Infact, as stated into the document:
This document contains an overview on the state of art outlining some technologies or applications that are to be considered as "under observation" for the future developments of MOSAIC. For ease of reference the access to the content of the document is structured into a general overview on G7 and EU actions followed by four sections (Hardware, Software, Applications, Projects) devoted to specific technologies and applications. Due to the even increasing state of technology and application, this document will be updated at least one time during the development of the project.
The guidelines aspect is present on the document but is not clearly addressed. The updated version of the document will contains a separate session. All the argument are already been discussed and analysed with the partner and the guidelines elements are already considered in the in progress working of the project. Mainly the upgrading will take into account the Siggraph, Silicon Valley and Microsoft missions. The dossier on the UE and G7 related project has been improved (AMICO, CHIO, CIMI, AQUARELLE and VISEUM) and for the application area : SUMS, Z39.5, Lightscape, Flashpix,..
The updated version of the WP1100 document will be delivered in the January month and will better outline the guidelines elements. The WP 1300 is in progress and the relevant part of the contact can be summarised as follows :
